Bio: I come to bike racing from the other great endurance sport, fly fishing. Given all the crossover, I've found it to be a relatively easy transition. Indeed, although I thought I was putting my fly rods in the closet temporarily when I bought my first road bike in the spring of 2002 and found myself going on four hour rides instead of evening trips after trout, but since I entered my first road race in the spring of 2004, they only seem to come out when the steelhead are running.
A job at the University of Alaska Southeast this past year improved my fishing results, but put a damper on my racing and training. This winter I'm back in the relatively dry and temperate (and less fishy) environs of Eugene, and training in earnest again. My first aim is to finish my dissertation on American literature and environmentalism so I can collect my degree this spring, but my second (and more important) aim is to collect enough points to upgrade to OBRA category 3 so I can try my luck in the more competitive field at the big spring stage races. My other ongoing project is honing my arguments for talking people into becoming deeply involved in competitive and recreational cycling.
